Mushroom Burger (Market Lane, Prahran Market)

Ask a Melbournian what’s the best thing to do upon waking up early morning on a Saturday? A cliché answer would be cruising up for ‘Coffee’, or ‘Brunch’, but my answer would most definitely be… most of you foodies would have guessed what it is! 🙂

Sitting from 10am to 2pm every Saturday – yes, only on this particular day of the week – right outside the windows of none other than one of Melbourne’s most raved about specialty coffee shop, Market Lane Coffee – and yes, only the Prahran Market branch out of all four that are currently running, could this precious ‘gem’ be found.

Outer surfaces of one whole giant Portobello mushroom is entirely brushed with herb butter and immediately hits the grill, before then being served in the middle of a Dench bun. Along with it are slices of onion, generous sprinkles of parmesan cheese and a dollop of chipotle mayonnaise that completes the deal. For me, what makes the combination distinctive is the chipotle mayonnaise, which is never found in any other vegetarian burgers in Melbourne that I know of. The sauce is smoky in taste, with slight and subtle spiciness, but good thing not as thick as the usual mayo, hence not overpowering the freshness of the mushroom itself. An even better news is that each bite of the mushroom pumps out plety of water hidden within it – so, so refreshing!!

Another unique point worth mentioning is that the cheese are grated, whereas four out of five other mushroom burgers would either have no cheese, or have cheese slices commonly found in almost any kind of burgers. Costing $9 per round, this is a perfect example of how simplicity could never fail – how a combination of five quality ingredients could pull it off into a rare steal, especially when washed off with a perfect latte made out of the creamy Schulz organic milk.

Talking about other things besides coffee that Melbournians should hold their heads up high for, one of them would definitely be the high quality of vegetarian food available throughout. If there’s any dish that could ever entice me into being a healthy vegetarian, Prahran market’s mushroom burger would definitely be the closest one by far!

P.s. Thank you to Eka Khoen for the amazing shots 🙂
